We were thrilled to host more than a dozen participants at our first community art class in a series made possible by the Santa Cruz Community Foundation. This is the first of 15 classes planned to be held each Saturday afternoon at the newly-remodeled Rio Rico Community Alliance Center on W Frontage Road, Rio Rico.
“We were pleased with the good attendance.” noted Board member and program director, popular artist Alex Jones, who taught a session on Chinese watercolor and brush techniques. He would like to be able to accommodate more students. “We like to keep the classes smaller for the personal attention but it seems we will need to add more tables next week,” he adds.
A box of fresh produce donated by the Alliance was the door prize for a drawing, yet “All participants are winners”, Jones assured them, as they lined up in the back of the room to show off their new creations.
Hilltop Board president, Derwent Suthers, who planned the program in partnership with Jones and Community Alliance directors, also expressed positive reviews: “We had students from ages 6 to 71, which is exactly what we wanted. They all seemed enthusiastic to learn this new technique and are looking forward to their next art adventure.” He is busy now working with the Rio Rico School District to begin in-classroom instruction next month.
